There will be several changes this school year in the processing of the USDA Free and Reduced Meal Applications. This is the result of a new USDA requirement that school systems use a family application.
The changes are:
1. A household will list all the students in the home on one application. In the past each student was listed on a separate application.
2. Each household with students enrolled during the 2006-07 school year will receive an application in the mail. The parent/guardian will complete the application and return it to the school cafeteria where the youngest student attends.
3. Families who do not receive an application in the mail due to an incorrect address or new students enrolling in the school system may pick up an application at any school their children attend.
4. The application will look different, also. The application is designed to be scanned. To accomplish this task, the application will have blocks for entering letters and numbers. Parents will need to read the instructions and carefully fill in the information so the scanner will recognize the letters and numbers.
5. When the application is returned to the school cafeteria, it will be reviewed by the cafeteria manager and, if completed properly, will be forwarded to a central office at Barton Academy for processing. If the application is incorrectly completed, is missing information or the signature of the parent/guardian it will be returned to the home.
After the application is approved or denied, a notification letter will be sent home with the students from the school cafeteria manager.
If there are questions about completing the application, parents should call the cafeteria manager where the student attends school.
